Invisible text & data compression

I'm interested to hear anyone's thoughts on "invisible text"
and web site data compression software

I understand that including invisible text in your Web site
can improve the chances of getting a good search engine
listing. I've read however, that it can be seen by some
search engines as spam which could proclude your site from
being listed.

Regarding data compression tools, I understand that these
devices can reduce loading time of one's site, does anyone
know of any side effects of using this software ?
