Selling advertising

I'm new to this list and haven't yet seen an answer to a
question re how a site finds advertisers. I understand
there are agencies, but can a site contact a company
directly and if they do, whom do they contact? How is
advertising space sold? Are there flat rates per year? I
know counting 'hits' is considered fakery by some since a
'hit' may be a click through, but what is it that
advertisers are paying for? Brand familiarization?
Actually expecting to sell on the site? A link to their
site for selling?

I saw the question re non-profit sites. The concept of
advertising on a non-profit site is not out of the
question. The more important question is what type of ads
for what type of product. Most often non-profits look for
sponsors who want users to id the sponsor with the
non-profit site's content/focus. Either way, the issue to
make enough money to keep the site up and current. If you
are looking for a sponsor or an advertiser you should look
for companies that are interested in or need your site's
information or want the public, i.e., the user, the view
them more positively as a result of their sponsorship or
advertising on the site.
