OK, the short answer. Submit your main url and all your
important sub-urls to the Search Engines (ie: Altavista,
Hotbot) once a month. Submit your main url to all the
Indexes (ie: Yahoo, Snap) once -- period. With the major
Indexes, wait a month, then if you don't get in, resubmit.
With the 2nd-tier Indexes, don't bother resubmitting.
Search engines and 2nd-tier indexes can be autosubmitted,
major indexes (Yahoo, Snap, LookSmart, Open Directory,
About, a few others) MUST be done manually for best
results.

wrote on preparing your pages for the search engines so
they rank better. Goes into issues like keyphrase selection
as well.

get into Yahoo" article, it also includes tips on About.com
and Open Directory. I have to update it today to reflect
changes in Open Directory.
