Well, I'd like to offer my views...

I hate to receive a message "get rich quick" or "buy Viagra"
:-) from some joe13654651654_at_hotmail.com asking me to reply
with "unsubscribe to be removed from his list.

Well, he doesn't know how rich I am, if I am, nor has any
idea of my sexual performance, or even my gender, but, that
doesn't stop him from invading my mailbox.

However, I don't mind getting a message from people that
know who I am and what I do, and have at least some idea of
my needs. I don't even mind someone trying to sell me
something related to my work!

If I get a message that is addressed to my name, that
clearly states how did they get to know me, and give me some
reasonable explanation why would I be interested in hearing
from them. I will not consider it being a spam.

For instance, it would be ok if they would say: Hi Neven, we
have seen your post to (XY list) and based on your statement
"(some quote)", we believe our service could benefit your
work...

To put it simple, for me, difference between spam and
legitimate unsolicited message is in fact that spammer don't
have a clue about me or my needs, while sender of legitimate
unsolicited message have at least some idea about who I am,
what I do, and may honestly believe that our collaboration
can be mutually beneficial (even if that means I have to buy
something from them).

Looking forward to hearing your comments.
