Overly agressive cache busting?

From: Jonathan Roy <roy_at_idle.com>

I wonder, how much cache are sites supposed to break? At
the moment our setup serves a new ad on every page view, and
every time that page is revisited even if the page isn't
reloaded. With an ad on every page, we actually serve more
ads than page views now. But as you allow less and less
caching, the click-through rates keep dropping.

Are we being too agressive with this? Should we only serve
a single ad per page view (load from the web server),
instead of a new ad ever time the page is shown in the
browser?

  Thanks for any advice,

-Jonathan
