That's good advice, Neven.

The funny thing about PR is that editors DO actually
want particular kinds of information. The trick is to
get into their heads and figure out how to deliver
EXACTLY what info they want, when they want it and how
they want it. That's why PR agencies are staffed with
former journalists and editors who understand this
mentality and have connections in the field.

Of course, it's even better when editors call you. They
do that when you prove yourself useful as a source.
That doesn't mean you always get quoted, of course. It
means that you're always ready to take an editor's
call, and that you can offer facts, figures, rumors,
gossips and tips. It also means that when you don't
know the answers, you can recommend others that do.

But why stop at just editors? Discussion lists like
this one are great publicity venues, as long as you
prove yourself useful in your area of expertise. If you
can offer value to others then you gain their
attention, trust and perhaps even their business. Quite
a few people have established their online businesses
that way.

And don't forget - many industry journalists stay
abreast of events by lurking on discussion lists. I
know this from my own experience running my European
industry list, Online Europe. The media are generally
too busy to post, but they're watching.
