With Open Directory, http://dmoz.org, which provides
the directory for AOL, Netscape, AltaVista, HotBot, and
Lycos, you can write to the editor of the categories
you're listed in suggesting that they look at your site
upgrades. Putting a link on your site to Open
Directory can help, too. Be careful about being too
promotional -- it will be a turn-off. Assume that the
editor is genuinely interested in the subject matter
and is an expert in it. Make your letter informative
and personal. Being helpful to and ingratiating with
the editor can earn you their favor. This can mean that
your site will be selected as an editor's choice, and
put to the top of the list, or your site's description
will be changed to something more favorable (n.b., more
favorable does not = more promotional. It means more
informative, with more keywords.)

Incidentally, Open Directory is closing in fast on
Yahoo in terms of total listings. Except in the
commercial areas, Open Directory already exceeds Yahoo
in listings. Yahoo still directs vastly more traffic,
but Open Directory is gaining fast.
