A personal email is a different animal from a mass
email. You can make a template for an email, of
course, but you should personalize it by putting in the
name of the site you are contacting and it's url. If
there was a person's name on the site, put that in too.
If you like the site, mention what you liked.
If you spend the time to personalize your request to a
particular site and if your request is not just a
"sales pitch", people won't consider it spam. However,
if the email is obviously the same as is sent to
others, and you are out to get something from them
(like them spending the time to look at your site or
make a million dollars through your system), it's spam.
I have sent personalized, unsolicited emails out to
numerous sites requesting reciprocal links. Most
people respond, some don't, but no one has ever gotten
upset or called it spam. This is how you start a
relationship: one at a time. If you don't have the time
to do this, you aren't trying to form a relationship,
you are just tossing handfuls of darts at a board and
seeing if anything sticks. And that is spam.
