I have a consulting business and use my website to list
sites that use the language (an old but very fast
mainframe dbms called Model 204) and to list consulting
firms that hire M204 people. The main effect of this
is that it keeps me known in the community - the two
consultants most recently hired at my current client's
site knew of me.
I get paid for solving programming programs. There is
no way I could give enough of this knowledge away to
hurt me. I recently sent a programming hint to the
Model 204 e-mail list. I expect that when I begin to
look for my next contract this might make me and my
skills more familiar to potential clients.
In other situations different principles may apply. If
you give enough away to get people started on a project
that they then need you to finish, your business should
increase.
