If this will be your livelihood (and it's not just a
college project), you need to plan on living off
something other than ads for the first year and a half.
The reason is that you have to show advertisers that
you can get people to your web site. And to do that
you're going to build the web site, get it known and
get traffic coming in. If you don't have any
moneybehind you at the start to develop the content, do
the production, and advertise and promote the site,
then you can plan on it taking a a year or more if the
site is really good to get it to the point where it is
attractive to traditional advertisers. Depending on
the nature of your site, even then, advertising alone
may not be enough to support it.
