Richard, et al.,
Four of my favorite examples of successful (Internet)
viral marketing are:
ICQ
The Instant Messaging software that boasts the most
users worldwide. Most of the marketing has been viral
on this one.

Hampster [sic] Dance
The "feel good" hit of 1998. One of those silly sites
that made the rounds last year.

The Blair Witch Project
Unless you've been living under a rock this year...
http://www.blairwitch.com/
and more recently...
Mahir's Homepage
A web page that has made the subject into an
international star. Again, another site that began
making the rounds on newsgroups.

Clearly, ICQ and Blair Witch are the two that
successfully pushed products to people. The other two
were happy accidents on which the owners quickly
capitalized.
(Isn't it a bit ironic how your query on viral
marketing has continued the spreading of these
resources to a whole new market? So that's how this
stuff works! Go figure. ;) )
Take care,
Rick
