OK, now we're getting this thing rollin'! A lot of good posts have been
coming in -- keep 'em coming.
I managed to get the Archives happening. If you'll log onto the FAQ page,
there's a link to them from there.
The only thing I would ask of posters is that they try to put a
descriptive, preferably even the same, subject line as the post they are
attempting to respond to. Thanks.
Enjoy this digest folks -- it's definitely the most synergistic yet!

Subject: Online Advertising Discussion List
Hi Kevin:
Thanks for creating your listserv. I've really enjoyed the first two
issues. I firmly believe in us "netters" getting into NETWORKING.
Thanks too for listing the addresses for those other discussion
groups. That came in very handy.
I'd like to let you guys know of another discussion group. It's
geared toward the small business person. It's name is Intenational Small
Business Consortium. The moderator is Nick Baker & can their site can be
found at www.isbc.com.
In addition to the discussion group they provide free links from their
site.
I believe the proceedure is to first link your site. Upon verification
Mr.
Baker provides notification of the discussion group. It appears to be
somewhat
bi or tri-weekly and has some useful information.
Please post if you find this appropriate.
Many Thanks,
Tony Bassman

Subject: Advertising Opportunities on The Net
Gee, here I've gone and subscribed to yet another list, but at
least it's highly focused. Great! Though as Kevin says, many of us
have 'previously met', here's a little bit of relevant news I
found at Media Central today (www.mediacentral.com).
"Nynex has rolled out a nationwide online shopping directory
called BigYellow with listings for about 16 million businesses and
4,000 advertisers.
The site, at http://www.bigyellow.com, is searchable by state,
city and even street and soon will feature a link from Infoseek
Guide, a popular World Wide Web search site. It is free to consumers.
Nynex said BigYellow advertising is being sold online, through
direct mail and by telephone sales reps, and the company has
established relationships with a number of advertising agencies.
Ad rates range from $111 a year for a Web site link to $300 a
year for a one-page text ad, to $2,400 for a three-month banner ad
in a business category."
The thing I find interesting is these ad rates seem fairly
reasonable (maybe even low), but there's no performance issue (# of
visitors etc.) mentioned in the article (which I did not entirely
repost).
OTOH, as I recall several of the other 'online yellow pages' are
offering a full page for free. (Media Central reports that even GE
Info Services will be offering free web page design and hosting at
www.gebusinesspro.com.) Talk about interesting opportunities. For $111
a year you can get a link from the NYNEX directory to your free GE
web site, unless you'd rather pay NYNEX $300 for a single page.
Does anyone find all of this confusing or is it just me that's
getting infoluted?
Don

I guess no advertising list would be complete without an
entry from SRDS (Standard Rates and Data Service Inc.). They've
had a web-site for some time, and now they've published the
first issue of their new quarterly directory--SRDS Interactive
Advertising Source.
The guide is $249 for four issues/year and so far has 246 pages
listing 730 major web sites and online services. Details include
rates, personnel and traffic about each site as well as details
on advertising and marketing opportunities available.
The next edition is due out in May.

Subject: Banner Ads - A Few Questions/DIGEST#002
I hope the following excerpt from "Targeting Banner Ads Drives Higher
Click Rates" that was published in the January issue of The
CyberMarketing Letter helps to answer the question about the value of
attaching banner delivery based on keyword searching.
"InfoSeek users see advertising banners either in a sequential
rotation with other advertisers or in a sequential rotation driven by
keywords. For example, Internet Shopping Network "owns" the keyword
shopping on InfoSeek. Whenever an InfoSeek visitor types the word
shopping they see Internet Shopping Network's banner advertisement on
the top of the query and results page. Bill Rollinson, Vice
President of Marketing at ISN tells us that, "We know from sites that
allow us to be more targeted (i.e. link an ad banner to a keyword)
that we get results that are 20-30% better than non-targeted banners.
" Bill Pick at InfoSeek confirms the value of banner targeting
noting that open rotation banner ads, on average, are experiencing a
1% to 2% conversion click rate on InfoSeek while keyword driven ads
are experiencing on average a 2% to 36% conversion click rate
(Conversion click rate is the percentage of all people who click on a
banner ad to go to the advertiser's linked site)."

Lenore Tuttle-Wilkas writes,

The going rate for banners is between $15 per thousand impressions (cost
per
thousand or CPM) and $30 CPM. Generally, you will pay a lower CPM when
buying a large number of impressions or when making a multi-month
commitment.
Site with low traffic counts and those that are highly targeted generally
fall at the upper end of the CPM.

That's what the list is for:) It's only 300 people, and they all may have
some of the answers you're looking for -- plus some people might even
have
some of the same questions. I'll give it a whack too...
Can you help me out or point me to any online resources?

Sounds about right, but it may not be an easy sell to someone who knows
nothing of the Web and how it might benefit them -- add that up, and the
annual cost is over $300. What I'm saying is that your services are
definitely worth what you want to charge, but it would not surprise me if
you end up having to give some of them "first 6 months free" deals in
order
to build a comprehensive guide.

$40 hour is about right for basic web design work -- at least here in the
Midwest. However, make sure you build in exceptions for cgi scripting ,
custom programming and things of that nature, so that, if needed, you can
cover the cost of hiring someone to do those things if you cannot.

DoubleClick's ad brokering site can be found at:
http://www.doubleclick.net
Great Idea
Sponsors who want to place ads sign up and make targeting selections -
the more
specific the choices, the pricier it is. Sites with space sign up on a
non-exclusive basis. DoubleClick matches sites and sponsors on the fly.
If
there aren't enough paying sponsors, it cross advertises (trades links)
between
websites with space. There are posted rates for advertising, but they
don't say
how big a cut they take - my impression is that is must be pretty hefty.
Terrible Execution
Has anyone gotten through to these people? I emailed them for info and
promptly
got a call from the president. When he found out that I wasn't looking
to
advertise, only make my site available for ads, he said I'd get a call
from
another person in a day or two (I didn't). I registered anyway.
Nothing. I
emailed again and got a message that my email was being forwarded to
someone
else who would reply (they didn't). I emailed this last person and still
haven't heard anything.
