From: "P.M. D'Acre"
Subject: Ads for IPLN-WWW Webcasting Service
We have launched a News Service, specializing in Positive, Upbeat News,
at http://www.positive-place.com. We are planning on running nightly,
with a 30 minute presentation, by May 1st. Due to the mix of audio/text
delivery, we are considering how to handle the advertising placements,
to ensure continuity and flow of the Webcast.
Any thoughts and observations would be deeply appreciated.

From: Roy Prince
Subject: To make it fly!!!
Thank you for providing such an excellent resource. And thank you to the
members of this group for your hard won wisdom and assistance. A true
gifting.
A tip: My email client (Eudora) allows me to link directly to Netscape
when
provided with a complete URL. What I mean is that if I encounter a
complete
URL in my email and I click on the URL Netscape starts automatically even
if
I am not on line. And Netscape displays the subject site.
So in all postings and signatures I suggest that one use the complete
URL,
including the "http://" part. It's not as pretty but...
I have a site dedicated to ecological architecture and sustainable design
and culture. It's a labor of love. I would like it to support me.
The URL is http://www.west.net/~prince/
It has been up for several months and I am getting about 25 hits a day.
I
have all but given up on the indexes. I have requested that Yahoo and
Alta
Vista list my site to no avail. However I have been aggressively trading
links with other ecological, architectural and sustainable sites. This,
I
believe, has been successful as I am now getting hits and email from
people
appreciating me for what the site offers. I also occasionally post to
news
groups when I can be of assistance.
The site itself is quite simple. No graphics and straight forward
linking.
I have, however, attempted to make it attractive and easy to use. I feel
it
needs more pizzazz but some of my colleagues tell that it is quite good
for
a serious niche subject.
I believe the site is a valuable resource to those interested in
ecological
building and sustainable culture. The particular complication of links
is,
I believe, unique. It is oriented to design and living with
sustainability
in mind. For those who do not know what sustainability is or means, it
is
like this: living lightly on the Earth or Small is Beautiful. It is
also a
very complicated commingling of environmental, social and economic
factors.
Plans for the future include creating original content such as a simple
primers, for instance, on solar energy or building with natural
materials.
And development of the "Voices" page, where people with interesting
perspectives can be heard.
My questions revolve around how can I make it a profit making concern. I
don't need to get rich just to make a reasonable living. I know, what's
reasonable? But that aside...
Any ideas for building up my hit rate? I have been holding off
soliciting
advertising until the hit rate gets to about 50 a day. I know that this
is
VERY small potatoes, yet there is a need and desire for this information.
I have thought of becoming a nonprofit or selling advertising. Another
idea
is to contact manufactures of ecological building products and soliciting
site support, linking to their site or creating a simple web presence for
them. As you can see I have potential advertising pages for
environmental
consultants, ecological materials suppliers and periodicals and resource
guides. No takers as yet.
I am not opposed to hiring a web designer and research assistant when the
site brings in a profit. Getting to the profit is the question.
Your comments are sincerely appreciated.
Very best wishes,
Roy Prince

From: rockmine_at_wintermute.co.uk (Roy Deane)
Subject: advertisers/sponsors wanted
Hi Kevin!
Okay, I'm probably coming at this from the wrong angle - most folks on
this
list are in the business of marketing - I'm looking for people to market
their products/services/whatever on my rock music based site.
Here are the basic stats (based on AccessWatch):
500+ visitors ; 1,200-1,500+ pages ; 8,000-10,000 hits a day. 60-70% of
visitors are US based and it would seem most are 25-50 years. The site is
growing daily and gaining regular visitors.
Trouble is, here I am based in Scotland, biggest thing on my server and I
don't know how that rates in the real world. (The UK based mag "Internet"
did quite a detailed case study on the site and seemed to think it was
doing quite well.)
It's not helped by the fact that Scottish based ad agencies will build
sites for their international clients but not consider advertising on
others. As for their Scottish clients, they figure most don't even know
what the web is.
So, I'm probably coming across as a total nerd but I want to know if you
marketing people out there can use a site like mine. It's probably not
the
way things are done but hey! what else should I do?
I'm keen on getting either sponsorship, advertising or both.
If you feel your clients could make use of the site or you can suggest
agencies that might help, or have serious suggestions that can assist,
I'd
appreciate it.
The site is based at: http://www.rockmine.music.co.uk/Rockmn.html
Also: (bit of a weird one) I seem to get one of McKinley's robots
visiting
the site once a week and staying a while. Last week it was on-site most
of
Wednesday and part of Thursday; the week before it logged in just after
midnight on Tuesday morning and left at 8pm on Thursday. Can anyone
explain
why it should hang around so much? It looked at a different page every
five
minutes - ideas, anyone?
One last thing - banks in the UK are still not accepting credit card
payments over the 'net unless you sign up to Barclay Square (at a cost of
15,000 GBP) which has 9 businesses on site and reports 1 million hits a
year (less than half of what I'm expecting). Are there any alternatives?
eg: US banks that will allow non US citizens to open accounts, etc?
Thanks in advance!
Roy.

Note that none of this is necessarily true. Specifically, the HTTP/HTML
specs say that a server _may_ pass META information along in the HTTP
header. But it doesn't actually _have_ to do that, and it still is
considered to be in-spec.
I tested this with WebStar, the main Macintosh webserver software (which
is
also used at Interedge), and discovered that the META info was _not_
being
passed during the HEAD call. When I asked Chuck Shotton (the developer)
about it, he replied... "Nope. That's HTML. Server never sees it, since
it's destined for the client as content." So you can't count on anything.
Unless I'm wrong here, which is not unbelievable...

From: Jonathan Roy
Subject: Ad placement companies, Cont.
This is a short note to keep you posted on my search for an easy way to
fill our empty ad spots. Thanks to Kevin's suggestion, I contacted both
Real
Media and Burst. RM called me back less than 30 mins after I emailed
them,
on Saturday morning, and were quite friendly. Someone has reported that
they
have been supplying RM with traffic information for over 3 weeks with no
ads
being placed there yet, so I can only hope we'll be able to host a few
ads
in less time. I also mailed Burst and received back a few emails
regarding
their service, and am waiting for their information packet to make it to
me
in real mail.
Still haven't heard from the other services, and I won't continue
chasing
after them. It's unlikely RM can fill the 1.5 million impressions we
have,
but Burst may be able to (since they say they have a site with 7.5
million a
month already), and I will keep the list posted. Likely I will end up
hosting some ads from each of them, if they can provide any.
In the meantime, a fellow subscriber on the list (Pacific Coast Feather
Company) has contacted us about carrying their ads on a per-clickthough
basis which sounds good. This will work well, but they do carry a cap on
the
max click-throughs per month we can generate revenue from. Considering a
1%
clickthrough on our front-page alone would exceed this cap, well over
half
our ad spots still need to be filled.
If anyone knows of (or works for) other companies that accept
advertising
with a pay-per-clickthrough rate, etc, please let me know. Our rates for
per-impression purchases are well below market prices, at least until the
end of the month. (Around $10CPM for our most popular pages.)
Thanks to all of you who have contacted me so far, and I hope some of
you
find this update useful!

You might try a company called 4Work (http://www.4work.com). Try to
contact
a Mike Hogan at mch_at_4work.com and ask him the same question. While
they run a job posting service, which, by your post is not what you're
after, they may know where to point you. Certainly won't hurt to check
their site out and see if you can find anything there.
