Subject: Web Advertising Tutorial

I thought many people would be interested in a new 'paper'
the San Jose Mercury News has put on the web: Adertising on
the World Wide Web with Mercury Center, located at
http://www.sjmercury.com/help/advertise. Though it's designed
as a tutorial for their services, any new advertiser will
find it informative.

I read about it at 1st Steps: Cool Marketing Resources
and Tools (http://www.interbiznet.com/nomad.html), which offers
small chunks of marketing info each day as well as a limited
Hall of Fame.

Subject: E-Mail Address tracking of web site visitors

This in response to Paul Sijtsma's

>I like to know if anyone knows a method to 'track' the e-mail adress of
a
>visitor on a web-site. This info should be stored somewhere in Netscape.
>Is it possible to read this information?

It depends on the browser that the site visitor uses. For some browsers,
it is possible to read the information as long as the person is online
and
at your site.

A more practical way of obtaining the information is to get the person to
either voluntarily or inadvertently "drop" his or her name. One way to
get
the person to inadvertently drop his name and email address is with
WebSnoop, a product in its beta testing phase that is available for free
during a 30-day trial period and thereafter by subscription for $36/year.
I am currently testing the product and I like it fine. More information
about WebSnoop is at http://www.wishing.com/.

By the way, I do suggest that even if you subscribe to WebSnoop, you make
clear on your pages that you are compiling a mailing list. I haven't
ever
spammed, but I have heard from those who have that the retribution is
really awful.

Subject: Re: Ad maintaince software

Regarding using imagemap to 'track' clickthroughs -- great idea!
The only negative I can think of is that it won't work for most
people who use Lynx.

Regarding ad management -- if you're using a Unix server it's pretty
easy to throw together a system using cron and perl or sh for ad
rotation and a custom cgi or imagemap and log analysis software to
track impressions and clickthroughs.

I have a rotate.pl and track.cgi (both perl) that I use and would be
willing to send to anyone who wants them.

The problem with this is that you can't have an alt defined for the map
and
if you do it won't be counted.

Subject: Customer service on the Web

Please post in the Request for Information section.

I am doing some research and am looking for examples of web sites
moving customer service and support (for non-internet related products
from 800 numbers to the Web). Fedex tracking site at
http://www.fedex.com/track_it.html
is a good example of one. Please Email me if you have any you have
seen (or used) that you feel are particularly good.
