Even if you figure out how to do this from a technical perspective, I
would
suggest you do not do so. From a point of view of the Internet culture,
this is considered extremely rude. You will alienate your web site
visitors if you start sending them emails and they have not explicitly
signed up for your mailing list, and you will probably find yourself
subject of a mailbomb in pretty short order.

It should be noted that Netsape has explicitly disabled this
functionality. They don't even report the e-mail address during FTP
logins anymore. This is likely to be the continuing trend.
You'll need to provide users a honey-trap to get their address. Perhaps
offering to send them files via e-mail, instead of having to download
them.

From: Kenneth Leebow
Subject: Tracking e-mail addresses
In regard to...
A more practical way of obtaining the information is to get the person to
either voluntarily or inadvertently "drop" his or her name. One way to
get
the person to inadvertently drop his name and email address is with
WebSnoop, a product in its beta testing phase that is available for free
during a 30-day trial period and thereafter by subscription for $36/year.
I am currently testing the product and I like it fine. More information
about WebSnoop is at http://www.wishing.com/.
Leebow's response....
As someone that in fact obtains e-mail addresses I say this "Do it the
Old
Fashion Way ~ Earn it."
It really irritates me to think that people/companies are going around in
sneaky and "big brother" fashion to get e-mail addresses. What purpose is
this going to serve anyway? If you use them, all you ar going to do is
annoy
the receiver!
This really goes against the grain of the Internet philosophy.
Answer this. How many websites have you gone to that you have no interest
in? Would you like them to start e-mailing you?
We have an e-mail newsletter that fortunately through hard work we have
been
able to obtain 6500+ subscribers. By the way if you want...Norman's
Friday
Hot Tips and Sites to Visit Newsletter just e-mail
norman_at_infoback.com.
We do not want subscribers that have no desire to receive the newsletter.
In
fact, once a month we "encourage" people to get off the e-mail list if
the
newsletter has no meaning to them. Our reason is that we want a very
"clean"
highly qualified e-mail list.
At your web site use the following to sign people up EASILY.
1> Subscribe by e-mail. It works.
2> DO NOT have a lengthy questionaire...ie. address, city, state etc.
Are you actually going to send snail mail?
3> I do not like majordomos and listservs. I find them hard to use.
4> Use autoresponders. They are GREAT!
5> Give yourself some time. You will find that you have a nice mailing
list
within 3 to 6 months.
Kevin....keep up the great work!
Good Luck.
Wishing You Net Speed:

Actually, that isn't true. Just hardcode coordinates in the anchor URL,
and don't specify ISMAP for the image, e.g.,
Works perfectly with images turned off and text-only browsers now.
The second and third lines, with the exception of the closing '>',
are completely optional. They're a little JavaScript statement that
prints a message in the status bar of Netscape 2.0.

p.s. I've already gotten a couple dozen requests for my ad rotating and
tacking perl scripts, so I'm going to make them available via the
web on Monday rather than mailing them individually.

As a user (as well as a publisher) I'd like to mention a word of caution
about using this technique. From the user's point-of-view, this is a big
detraction which may even prevent them from returning.
In the past few months, Lycos has gone to this model. I get the search
results, go check one of the URLs, then hit my browser's "Back" button.
The
page has to completely reload from the Lycos server.
Because of this, I've stopped using Lycos as often as I used to.
The question as I see it is:
Is the user part of a potential loyal relationship with the Web site?
-or-
Does the user exist primarily to generate more hits for the Web site?

*** Moderator: This meta tag only causes the entire page to reload *if*
and only if a change has been made to it. It does not cause the entire
page to reload for no reason -- I would never knowingly do that! It does,
however, tally another hit on the page counter, because it *always* sends
the http request to the server to *see* if a change has been made -- if
no change has been made, no reload, just another hit counted. That's all.

I've heard that in the print world the going rate is 15%. For web stuff,
I've
seen rates from 15%-50% with quite a few in the 25-30% range. Given the
educating that web reps are having to do, this seems fairly reasonable.
The only web rep firms I know of are:
WebRep - They want sites with a minimum of
100,000
visitors/month
Interactive Media Sales - supposed to be , but it
wasn't up
last I checked. I think they're after high volume sites also.
What other web rep firms (as opposed to automated ad brokers) are out
there?
