Subject: Moderator's Comments
Howdy Folks,
We have a much shorter digest today -- I promise that the next time a
digest looks to require being split into two separate messages, I will
hold some posts over till the next day.
I would like to briefly remind everyone that this is a forum for
discussing advertising related issues. I do not mind discussing marketing
or sales issues, if they come up in the context of an advertising
discussion. However, we seem to have focused more and more on marketing
than on advertising. May I suggest two things: 1) If you have marketing
problems or questions, post them to the Internet Marketing Discussion
Group, moderated by Glen Fleishman . 2) In the
course of answering someone's question, please try to keep your answers
and suggestions focused on advertising. You may touch on marketing and
sales issues, but please, try to keep that aspect of it as brief as
possible.
Bottom line is that this list was started with a specific purpose in mind
-- we have been veering away from that at times, and should come back to
center, or else we start to border on competing with Glen's list, which
definitely was not my intention when I started this.
Thanks, and best to all,
Kevin Fadden

Subject: Marketing problem
I'm a brand-new subscriber to your list; from what I've seen so far, it
will be a valuable resource. As a footnote to what follows: I do not yet
have a Web page; I am working on it.
My sales/marketing problem is unusual. I'm a Macintosh database developer
whose creations are in the widely divergent areas of prospect/customer
tracking, insurance, manufacturing, education, health care and
publishing.
To make matters more complicated, I'm not certain whether I want to be
actively involved in selling my products or to find an organization that
will take on the responsibility of promoting and selling them. (Since
these
are not simple, mass-market applications, they will require support,
which
in either case I would provide.) Since I'm tending toward the latter
position (finding a marketer), I have been advertising (well, kind of)
for
a company to sell my databases (posting to the biz.comp.software
newsgroup), alas, to no avail.
I wonder whether anyone among your subscribers has encountered another
applications developer trying to find a sales/marketing organization? And
in the case of markeing directly to the end-user, how does one search
through the vast array of URLs and find places where, say, small
manufacturers or perhaps educators would be concentrated?
With best regards,
Dave Roberts

Subject: e-mail newsletters
We took note of Rebecca Coffey's mention of e-mail newsletters, and we
have a
basic question or two. We are in process of starting up a specialty e-
mail job
newsletter (for artists and writers in the CD ROM and WWW publishing
industries)
and we were wondering how you convince potential advertisers--in our
case, with
job placements--that our subscription base is big enough for them to
justify
paying to place ads. We already have a bunch of subscribers, just from a
couple
of announcements. Now we need publishers' ads. We will give ad space, in
the
first issue.
Any hints on how to promote an e-mail newsletter of this sort? I know
enough to
post in the appropriate newsgroups, etc., but does anyone have any other
tricks
of the trade?
{And I suppose this is a really dumb question, but what the heck is a
meta tag?
It ain't in my Funk & Wagnalls.)
Regards, Russ Nichols in L.A. --Publisher of the forthcoming Artists' and
Writers' e-Job News. (copyright 1996)
