Subject: Advertising to ISPs?
My client is promoting a marketing program - 1 800 GET ONLINE - to local
and
regional ISPs. (Exclusive use per area code, callers routed directly to
each
ISP.)
The question: what online mechanism - email, news groups, etc. - would
be
the most productive lead generator for my client to reach the ISPs?
Also, do most of these smaller companies have advertising directors, or
should my client be contacting the president?
Thanks -
Judith Oppenheimer

Subject: List of keyword sponsorable sites?
I know there are a few lists of sponsorable sites already available but
does
anyone know of a list of those which accept keyword sponsorship?
If not could somebody point me towards a few which do. I'd like to get as
comprehensive a list as possible, hopefully including the major sites
which
get thousands of hits and lesser sites which receive fewer hits.
If there isn't already a list like this and I get hold of enough sites
I'll
put them up at our web site and notify this list when it's complete.
Thanks,
Tom Hukins

From: "Don 'DocDon' Taylor"
Subject: Are Your Web Site Links and Your Email Address Legal?
My apologies to anyone who is on several of these lists,
but I thought this news that I picked up from another list was
of considerable relevance to all. I have edited this slightly.
This seems to be a prime example of how provincial lawmaking can
have undesirable effects on Net business. Let's all have a good
read and return to discuss the impact on sales and marketing.
[Yesterday,] the Guv down in Georgia signed off today on the
state legislature's imbecility. HB1630, dubbed the Internet Police
bill, is now law. Court case ahead? Is this "the day the sites went
out in Georgia"? The word from at least one online lawyer is for Web
sites down there to be damn careful--don't link to other sites without
permission.
It is entirely possible the Internet Police Bill will be
like the Decency Act. People will ignore it and test it, but like
the Exonian silliness, HB1630 is hardly the best way to promote
technology.
Tell your bosses to laugh next time a Georgia bureaucrat calls up
and ask if MegaComp would like to build a plant down there.
Net.activists are skeptical that the legislature will overturn HB1630.
But, hey, if enough high-tech companies, activists and online newspapers
speak up, maybe the technophobes down there will see their baby bite
them.
For the grubby details and a link to the text of HB1630, see:
http://www.gahouse.com/docs/whatsnew/parsons.htm
In case you're wondering about the origins of the Internet Police bill,
it was introduced by Don Parsons, a Net-stupid employee of BellSouth
(which has another suit going against a little company for using the
domain name RealPages.com and the slogan 'Let your mouse do the
walking'. BellSouth claims these materials are 'too close' to ones
they have trademarked.) According to the Caucus: "During floor debate,
Rep. Parsons could not explain the concept of a link on a home page. It
was clear to many that he had no idea of what the Internet was all
about.
Supposedly, his desire was to prevent 'misrepresentation' on the
Internet.
Parsons admitted that he had never been on the Internet, except looking
over a colleague's shoulder at work."
The Caucus quotes from HB1630:
"It shall be unlawful for any person...to
transmit any data...if such data uses any individual name, trade
name,
registered trademark...which would imply that such person...has
permission or is legally authorized to use such trade name,
registered
trademark..."
Granted, some might say that you could assume implied consent if any
material is up on an open medium like the Web and you want to link to it
with appropriate identification by name. But the law is still a *big*
threat, given the new legal liabilities it creates for journalists,
activists and many others. See
http://www.clark.net/pub/rothman/telhome.html
for an example of intellectual property law as a bully's tool against the
First Amendment.
Consider, too, the accompanying ban on pseudonyms. One Georgian jokingly
emailed that he'd change his Net address to include his real name and
snail
address.
If this were just a Georgia aberration, that would be one thing. But,
again,
as stated in the my earlier post, there are reports that similar anti-Net
efforts are underway in California and elsewhere.
Meanwhile, thanks to the Electronic Frontier Foundation for bringing
Georgia's imbecilities to people's attention. EFF tells me that the best
address to use to get the group's current newsletter--containing an
article
on this--is
http://kragar.eff.org/pub/EFF/Newsletters/EFFector/HTML/current.html.

If it helps anyone, there's a page on our site which deals with
on-line promotion, listing search engines, sources of newsgroups and
mailing lists, classified directories and so on + plus advice on
Internet marketing strategy:
http://www.u-net.com/tka/magic/search.htm
BTW, I've found the recent posts on Net advertising and marketing to
be very illuminating. Of particular value to everyone was Thom
Reece's comment:
"The best lesson that we can give to our budding young online marketers
is to
eliminate the word *online* and to start thinking of themselves as
MARKETERS"
The only change I'd make to this sound advice is to eliminate the
word "young" :-)
Sure, the Internet is a major new advertising, marketing and
communications medium, which requires some fundamentally different
strategies. But when push comes to shove, it will be those companies
who have been able to integrate their Internet marketing strategy
into their overall marketing and business strategies who will gain
and retain a competitive edge.

From: "Plank Dietmar"
Subject: request for info on "how to use communication tools on the inter
Hi to everyone !
First, let me say that I am in favour of the digest form !
And now to my request: I am writing my marketing thesis (yes, another
dumb student with this great idea) on
"advertising on the internet - an analysis of the possibilities of
using communication-politics instruments (like pr, sales promo, adv.
etc.) on the internet".
So far I found quite a lot about "how to promote one's site" , "do's
and don'ts", "how to make the surfer come back", etc.
But what I haven't found are some theoretical papers and examples
talking about using and implementing the different communication tools
(as mentioned
above).
I would deeply appreciate any help, comments, ideas!!!
