Subject: Fast Forward Software

I'm sure many of you have heard about the new software, Internet Fast
Forward, that allows browsers to totally block out ad banners when
visiting
sites.

Since our site depends on advertising, this poses a threat to our
business.
I have two questions. Do you think that this type of software will become
as
popular as some suggest? If so, does anybody know a way around it?

You can find more poop on this at their web site: http://www.privnet.com/

Instead of relying on someone else's figures, create your own - at least
you'll know the results are at least semi-valid! Surf the net looking for
sites in the categories in which you are interested, and see how many of
them accept advertising or display it on their pages. You'll also get a
much better feel for the types of advertising used and how effective they
are on you.

Subject: Re: Bulk Email

Daniel Dern writes:

The stance I and many others take is very simple:
 - UNSOLICITED bulk email is UNWELCOME. It constitutes theft of my
time and money and resources. If I have not EXPLICITLY asked for
certain information or ASKED to be put on a list, bulk email is
unsolicited. That my name was collected at a Web site does not,
per se, constitute agreement to be sent email. Nobody has the right
to "sell my name" on a list and claim that it's OK to send me email...
unless, again, I've agreed to be on this list. It is UNACCEPTABLE
to put me on a list I have not asked to be on which then requires me
to unsubscribe. Period. I and many others consider any such
unsolicited
email as, upon repeat offense after one warning, legitimate reasons to
invoice the sender for a processing fee of anywhere from $100 to
$1000.

 - SOLICITED email is welcome. That means I've asked for it. It does
NOT
mean that I've participated in some relevant forum, or appear to be in
   a relevant demographic, or whatever.

Daniel,

What about advertising that you haven't requested, but that is attached
to email information that you HAVE requested?

I agree. As a consumer, I personally don't mind receiving e-mail from a
site I've registered at, since if I cared enough to register, I'm
probably
interested. (But it's better to let people know they will be receving
bulk
messges from you, have an opt-out or opt-in option, and a choice of
categories, if appropriate.)

What I don't appreciate at all is the selling of my e-mail address to
other
companies. I;m not sure why this bothers me -- I don't mind receiving
unsolicited mail in my physical mail box (I do get irritated by highly
untargeted stuff though, mostly because it's such bad marketing).

What's totally unacceptable to me are the bulk e-mail companies that go
around collecting addresses from usenet groups and the like.
