My apologies to the list for not having published any digests the past
few days -- I made a last second decision to attend the E3 Conference in
Los Angeles. It was quite a trip (both figurativley and literally).
One thing I have to say about the trade shows I've been to, and something
that really bothers me, personally. I'm not sure if it was on this list
or on I-Sales or I-Marketing, but someone posted a report about Internet
World a few weeks back that lamented these companies basically presenting
"Infomercials" at their booths. I witnessed my fair share at E3. I have
to tell you, when you get some people who might as well be selling Didi 7
or Finish 2000 or Juice-O-Matics on late night TV, and hire them to
present a pandering, patronizing, over-acted (in true James T. Kirk
fashion) melodrama, you, IMHO, are engaging in one of, if not the,
tackiest forms of marketing imaginable. I think it's worse than any spam
or banner ad or even an infomercial on TV -- people (such as myself)
travel a long way for these shows AND pay good money to get in. Give us
our money's worth, not an excuse to take a nap.
Of course, it is nice to be able to sit down and take a load off for
awhile, but I would really like to be motivated to stay awake, as well.
Any thoughts?

Forward, that allows browsers to totally block out ad banners when
visiting
sites. Since our site depends on advertising, this poses a threat to our
business.
I have two questions. Do you think that this type of software will become
as
popular as some suggest? If so, does anybody know a way around it? <<
I was interviewed about this by Inter_at_ctive Week the other day and I
basically told them that it was much ado about nothing. I don't think
that
most web users find banner ads all that obstrusive, either in terms of
appearance or length of time to load. Most banners are around 3K and
load
time is negligible.
I don't think they aggravate most people sufficiently enough to provide
the
motivation required to take required action. You have to go to the Fast
Forward (clever name, huh?) site, download the software, then use your
right
mouse button to ban banners that they don't pickup.
-- Basically, banners are barely bother enough to bother banning.

Also, I think you could work around it. If you are set up to rotate
banners
as most sites are, you could have an infinite number with different
names,
such as ad1.gif, ad2.gif, ad3.gif, ad4.gif, etc. They would be archiving
banners that would never be displayed again anyhow.
Like I told Inter_at_active Week -- it's a clever solution to a non-
existent
problem.
Take Care,
John Audette
