I'm an italian journalist and I write for the "Virtual" magazine, 
probably
the most prominent revue in my country dedicated to the Digital 
Revolution,
for the italian edition of the ".net magazine", for "Le Monde 
Diplomatique"
and other revues, with articles dedicated to the new technologies.
I'm working on a small book about advertising and marketing online. Could
any of you give me some tips about a good bibliography I should read 
about
this topic (most of all, some good articles I can find online and Web 
sites
addresses).

Subject: Counting impressions


  I've painfully realized the way I'm counting impressions is way, way, 
way
off. Does anyone know the way places like Netscape, Yahoo, etc, count 
their
"impressions" or "exposures"? I had previously been counting the number 
of
times we sent the ad graphic. I figured this would skip people with 
images
turned off or on Lynx, which advertisers aren't paying for.. they are 
paying
for their graphic to be seen. However, now that the end of the month roll
arouns, my stats tell me the graphic was sent 275K time, and the page was
loaded 820K times. It's not reasonable the the ad was seen only 1/3 of 
the
times the page was loaded..

  So, what do other sites do? Do they simply count the number of times 
the
page is loaded while the ad is installed on that page, and possibly take 
off
a small % for users that don't see the graphics for whatever reason?

  Any advice on this would be great appreciated.
